Using vaccines during breastfeeding

26 October 2023All vaccinations, including live vaccines, can be given during breastfeeding. The only exception is yellow fever vaccine which is not recommended.

Using laxatives during breastfeeding

24 October 2023Any laxative can be used during breastfeeding although prucalopride should be used with caution. Recommendations apply to full term and healthy infants.

Using oseltamivir and zanamivir during breastfeeding

12 October 2023Oseltamivir and zanamivir can be used during breastfeeding when clinically indicated. Recommendations apply to full term, healthy infants only.

Using emergency contraception during breastfeeding

10 October 2023A copper IUD or a single oral dose of levonorgestrel are preferred. Ulipristal may also be considered. Recommendations apply to full term and healthy infants.

Managing COVID-19 and breastfeeding

6 October 2023Continue breastfeeding during COVID-19 infection, even if dexamethasone, Paxlovid, sotrovimab or tocilzumab are required. COVID-19 vaccines can also be given.

Treating bipolar disorder during breastfeeding

5 October 2023Lithium and valproate can be used during breastfeeding, after consideration of some specific issues. Recommendations apply to full term and healthy infants.

Medically terminating a pregnancy during breastfeeding

28 September 2023Breastfeeding can be continued following short term treatment with mifepristone and misoprostol. Recommendations apply to full term and healthy infants.

Treating opioid dependence during breastfeeding

1 August 2023Methadone is the preferred choice of treatment for opioid dependence during breastfeeding. Recommendations apply to full term and healthy infants only.

Using oral or parenteral corticosteroids during breastfeeding

17 July 2023Corticosteroids can be used during breastfeeding. Use the lowest dose and duration possible. Recommendations apply to full term, healthy infants only.

Using inhaled or topical corticosteroids during breastfeeding
